Choosing a color is one of the most personal parts of a paint job. It is also where a little patience pays off the most. Ebenezer has a good eye for color, and these are the habits that help.
Look at the light
A color changes through the day. The same wall can look warm in the morning and cool in the evening, and a room that faces one direction will never look like a room that faces another. Before you decide, look at the space at different times of day.
Test it on the wall, not just on a card
A small card in your hand tells you very little. Put a sample on the wall itself, in more than one spot, and live with it for a few days. It is the most reliable way to find out whether you still like it once the novelty wears off.
Think about what does not change
Floors, counters, cabinets, roof tiles and stone all have colors of their own, and the new paint has to work with them. Hold your sample next to those things, since they will not be changing.
Use the color to say something about the room
A color can make a room feel calm, warm or bright. Decide how you want the room to feel, then look for the color that does that. If you are not sure, that is a good conversation to have with someone who paints for a living.
Exteriors ask a little more
