Painting Gutters and Downspouts
By Lemoon's Painting
Gutters and downspouts can be painted, and on a repaint they usually should be, but they need their own preparation. Galvanized steel and aluminum are cleaned, degreased and scuffed, bare or rusted metal gets a primer made for metal, and leaks are fixed first. Painting downspouts the wall color makes them disappear; painting gutters the trim color lets them frame the roofline.
Gutters and downspouts are the metal that most homeowners never look at until it looks wrong. On a fresh repaint, a faded, chalky or streaked gutter running the length of the roofline is suddenly very visible, and a pale downspout cutting through a newly painted wall draws the eye straight to it. Painting them is usually part of a complete exterior, and doing it properly is a small job of its own.
Can gutters and downspouts be painted?
Yes. Aluminum and galvanized steel gutters take paint well when they are cleaned, prepared and primed correctly. Copper is normally left to weather, and vinyl follows the rules for vinyl, including its color limits. The usual failures are paint peeling from a surface that was never properly cleaned, or rust bleeding through because bare steel was not primed.
What your gutters are probably made of
Seamless aluminum is common on San Diego homes, formed on site in long runs and supplied with a baked factory finish. That finish lasts many years but eventually chalks and fades, especially on south and west sides inland in places like Santee.
Galvanized steel is found on many older homes. Its zinc coating protects the steel until it wears through, after which rust spots appear, often first at seams, end caps and around hangers.
Copper is uncommon and is usually left alone, since its weathered patina is the point.
Vinyl gutters appear on some homes; they are generally painted only in light colors, if at all.
Problems to fix before painting
Paint covers a gutter; it does not repair one. Before painting, a careful look covers:
- Leaks at seams, corners and end caps, which show as rust trails, stains on the fascia or drips during rain.
- Loose hangers and sagging sections that hold standing water.
- Rust-through, where steel has holes rather than surface rust.
- Soft or rotted fascia behind the gutter, which is often revealed by an old leak.
Small seam leaks can often be cleaned and resealed during preparation, and the estimate says whether that is included. Gutters that are rusted through or badly sagging are a replacement question, which belongs to another trade, and Ebenezer will tell you plainly if that is what he is looking at. If the fascia behind needs work, our article on painting exterior trim and fascia covers that part.
How gutters and downspouts are prepared
- Clean out the inside so leaves and grit do not wash out over fresh paint.
- Wash and degrease the outside faces and downspouts, using a cleaner suited to metal and enough scrubbing to remove tiger stripes.
- Rinse and dry thoroughly.
- Remove loose paint and rust with a scraper or wire brush, feathering the edges.
- Scuff glossy factory finishes lightly so the primer has something to hold.
- Spot-prime bare metal with a primer made for that metal: rust-inhibiting on steel, a bonding primer on bare aluminum or galvanized.
- Finish with a quality exterior acrylic from Dunn-Edwards or Sherwin-Williams, usually by brush on gutters and by brush or spray on downspouts.
Coastal metal needs more care
Near the water, salt settles on gutters and downspouts just as it does on walls, and it attacks any bare steel it can reach. In Imperial Beach and other coastal neighborhoods, a thorough freshwater wash is essential, any rust is taken back to sound metal and primed without delay, and the painted surface is worth rinsing periodically. Galvanized gutters close to the coast often show their age sooner than the same gutters inland.
Choosing the color
The color decision takes one sentence to state and is often got wrong.
Downspouts generally look best painted to match whatever they run down. On a stucco wall that means the body color, so the downspout disappears. Where a downspout runs down a trim corner, it takes the trim color.
Gutters usually take the trim or fascia color, so they read as part of the roofline rather than as a separate band. On some homes, matching the roof edge is the better choice.
Very dark colors on metal gutters in full inland sun get hot, but metal tolerates heat far better than vinyl. The bigger concern with dark gutters is that dust and chalk show more.
Downspouts: details that matter
- Brackets and straps are painted in place, or the downspout is detached where practical so the wall behind it can be painted cleanly.
- Elbows and joints are where water and debris collect; they are cleaned and checked for leaks.
- The ground end, where water discharges, should direct water away from the wall. Splash-back at the base of a downspout is a common cause of stained and peeling stucco.
When to paint them
Painting gutters is best done on dry days, and ideally before the winter rains so the paint has time to cure. They are typically done alongside the fascia and eaves during a full exterior, since the same ladders and masking serve both. On period homes such as many in La Mesa, gutter color is part of the overall scheme and is worth deciding with the trim.
Include them in the scope
Gutters and downspouts belong on the estimate as a named item, with what is included: cleaning, sealing small leaks, priming and painting, and whether the insides are cleaned out. That precision keeps the job clear for everyone. To get them looked at with the rest of the house, request a free estimate. There is more on the exterior painting service and how the job runs.
Common questions
Should downspouts be painted the same color as the wall?
Usually, yes. A downspout painted to match the wall it runs down tends to disappear, which is what most homeowners want. Painting it the trim color turns it into a vertical stripe. The exception is when the downspout runs down a trim board or corner of a contrasting color, where matching that surface makes more sense.
What are the dark streaks on the front of my gutters?
Those are often called tiger stripes: grime carried over the front edge by overflowing water, which bonds to the old finish. A normal wash does not remove them. They need a cleaner suited to the purpose and some scrubbing, and painting over them without cleaning leaves a weak bond and the stripes can ghost through.
Can new galvanized gutters be painted right away?
New galvanized steel has a surface that resists paint, and coatings often peel from it if applied without the right preparation. It needs cleaning to remove manufacturing residue and, depending on the coating system, a primer made to bond to galvanized metal. The primer's label explains what the surface needs before it goes on.
Are the insides of gutters painted?
Normally not. The inside is cleaned out so debris does not fall onto fresh paint, and the visible outside face, the underside and the downspouts are painted. Paint inside a gutter does little but peel, because standing water and debris sit there. Leaks at seams and end caps are a separate repair that should be addressed before painting.
